Most people put a lot of heart into their website. Once it’s live, the next question is usually: How do I help more people find it?

SEO is a bit of a “black art”. Yes there are experts out there BUT you don’t need to understand the technical side to make decent progress. Here are three practical steps that anyone can take. They’re simple, worthwhile, and make a genuine difference.

1. Use clear page titles and descriptions: Search engines prefer clarity. A clear title tells Google what the page is. A short description tells people what they’ll find.

Not so helpful:
  • Title: Welcome
  • Description: Thanks for visiting my site.

More effective:
  • Title: Yoga Classes in Nelson
  • Description: Weekly yoga classes for all levels, with gentle teaching and a warm, supportive space.

2. Add simple, helpful text to each page

Beautiful pages without much text can confuse Google. A short, friendly paragraph at the top of each page helps both search engines and visitors.

Not so helpful:
  • A page with only photos and a heading: Our Retreat.

More effective:
  • Our retreat offers a peaceful space in Golden Bay, surrounded by native bush. Here you’ll find details about our rooms, facilities, and what to expect during your stay.

3. Rename your images and add alt text

Google relies on words, not pictures. Renaming your image files and adding alt text is one of the easiest SEO wins.

Not so helpful:
  • File name: IMG_4567.jpg
  • Alt text: (left blank)

More effective:
File name: golden-bay-yoga-retreat-deck.jpg

​A yoga retreat I was involved with had been consistently posting about upcoming retreats and online courses. The content was high-quality, and the offerings themselves were beautifully curated. Yet, despite this, the post that generated the most engagement that month wasn’t about yoga at all — it was about an apple cake. A simple, warm, inviting post about a homemade apple cake drew more likes, comments, and shares than anything else. 
Many small business owners tend to treat marketing as a one-way broadcast—posting promotions and social media advertising. I’ve been there . . . done that!

​But one thing I’ve learned over the years is that the best marketing isn’t about the hard sell; it’s about a conversation.

Good marketing today is less about pushing a product or service onto people; it’s about building trust, establishing rapport, and positioning yourself as knowledgeable and passionate in your field.

​A conversation is a two-way street—it involves listening, engaging, and responding. When you focus on engagement rather than hard selling, you create stronger connections with your audience, which can better lead to those sales that you really want.

There’s a reason conversational marketing works. Studies show that customers are more likely to buy from businesses they feel connected to I wont bore you with them, but feel free to ask).

How to Make Marketing a Conversation

If you want your marketing to feel more like a conversation and less like a sales pitch, here are some effective ways to make that shift:

This starts conversations while also showcasing products naturally.

Why this works . . .
  • It highlights the benefits of gluten-free and dairy-free eating without lecturing.
  • It educates subtly by explaining why certain foods may leave people feeling unwell.
  • It invites real engagement by asking about favourite treats and encouraging recipe swaps.
  • It positions the business as a knowledgeable, approachable source for healthy, delicious food.

A marketing strategy serves as the foundation for your business’s promotional efforts, outlining what you want to achieve and why. It should clearly define your target audience, ensuring your message reaches the right people who are most likely to engage with your products or services.

A strong strategy also identifies your unique value proposition (UVP)—what sets you apart from competitors and why customers should choose you. Establishing measurable goals, such as increasing website traffic by 20% or boosting social media engagement, helps track success and guide decision-making. Additionally, it’s important to analyse your market positioning, understanding how your brand fits within the competitive landscape.

A marketing plan is the tactical roadmap that outlines how to execute your marketing strategy and achieve your goals. It should include a detailed timeline of actions to keep efforts organised and on track. For example, scheduling content creation, social media campaigns, or email launches ensures consistent delivery.

The plan should define specific marketing channels (e.g., SEO, social media, email, or paid ads) based on where your target audience is most active. It should also allocate budgets and resources, ensuring you know how much time, money, and tools are needed for each initiative. Assigning responsibilities and accountabilities—who does what and by when—helps ensure smooth execution.

In the early days of the internet, creating a website was not for the faint-hearted. Designing a website back then required learning how to write code using a language called HTML. There were no templates or easy tools; everything had to be done from scratch. If you wanted a picture on your website, you had to know how to place it using code. If you wanted your text to be a certain colour or size, that required more coding knowledge.

Hosting a website was equally challenging. You couldn’t just sign up online and have your website up and running in minutes. Instead, you had to find a hosting provider, often at a high cost, and sometimes even manage your own server. This meant that building and maintaining a website was often reserved for those with specialised skills or enough money to hire someone who had them.
