Forget the Hard Sell: Why Marketing Should Feel Like a Conversation

3/20/2025

A yoga retreat I was involved with had been consistently posting about upcoming retreats and online courses. The content was high-quality, and the offerings themselves were beautifully curated. Yet, despite this, the post that generated the most engagement that month wasn’t about yoga at all — it was about an apple cake. A simple, warm, inviting post about a homemade apple cake drew more likes, comments, and shares than anything else.
Many small business owners tend to treat marketing as a one-way broadcast—posting promotions and social media advertising. I’ve been there . . . done that!

But one thing I’ve learned over the years is that the best marketing isn’t about the hard sell; it’s about a conversation.

The Power of Marketing as a Conversation . . .

Good marketing today is less about pushing a product or service onto people; it’s about building trust, establishing rapport, and positioning yourself as knowledgeable and passionate in your field.

A conversation is a two-way street—it involves listening, engaging, and responding. When you focus on engagement rather than hard selling, you create stronger connections with your audience, which can better lead to those sales that you really want.

Check out this article by David Maister: Marketing is a Conversation. It’s a little dated but it does a good job of showing how businesses thrive when they focus on relationships rather than transactions.

There’s a reason conversational marketing works. Studies show that customers are more likely to buy from businesses they feel connected to I wont bore you with them, but feel free to ask).

Trust and familiarity play a significant role in purchasing decisions. When people engage with your content, they begin to see you as a valuable resource rather than just another seller.

How to Make Marketing a Conversation

If you want your marketing to feel more like a conversation and less like a sales pitch, here are some effective ways to make that shift:

1. Share Your Knowledge & Invite Input
Instead of just telling people what you know, involve them in the conversation. For example, if you run a yoga studio, share a tip on mindfulness and ask:
"What’s your favourite way to reset when life gets overwhelming?"
This makes your audience feel valued and included.

2. Ask Genuine Questions
Engagement happens when people feel like their opinion matters. Instead of a promotional post about your café’s new menu, ask:
"What’s your go-to comfort food, and how does it make you feel?"
This naturally leads to interactions that showcase your brand without feeling pushy.

3. Encourage Storytelling
People connect through stories. If you run a wellness business, share a personal experience or a customer success story, then invite others to do the same:
"We’ve seen how small lifestyle changes can make a huge difference in energy levels. Have you made any changes that have positively impacted your health?"

4. Run a Fun Challenge or Poll
Challenges encourage participation and make marketing interactive. A food truck might post:
"We challenge you to share your best gluten & dairy-free snack ideas! Let’s create the ultimate feel-good food list together!"

5. Create a “This or That” Post
Give people an easy way to engage with your brand without a big commitment. A boutique owner might post two outfit styles and ask,
"Which one is more your vibe – classic & timeless or bold & trendy?"
This starts conversations while also showcasing products naturally.

An Example in Action

Here’s an example—from someone who might own a café or food truck that creates gluten- and dairy-free food . . .

"Great food isn’t just about taste—it’s about how it makes you feel. Our approach to food is simple: nourishing, delicious, and free from gluten and dairy, so your body feels as good as your taste buds do. We believe food should love you back, not leave you feeling sluggish or out of sorts.

One of our favourite treats is this naturally sweet, energy-packed bliss ball recipe. It’s full of good fats, plant-based protein, and simple ingredients that give you steady energy throughout the day!"

"Have you ever tried going gluten or dairy-free? If so, did you notice any difference in how you felt? More energy, better digestion, clearer skin? Everyone’s experience is unique, and we’d love to hear yours!"

Why this works . . .
  • It highlights the benefits of gluten-free and dairy-free eating without lecturing.
  • It educates subtly by explaining why certain foods may leave people feeling unwell.
  • It invites real engagement by asking about favourite treats and encouraging recipe swaps.
  • It positions the business as a knowledgeable, approachable source for healthy, delicious food.

A challenge for you!

Here’s a challenge — take one of the five strategies from this blog and try it in your next post or email. Then come back and tell us what happened!
